Database Management Systems

Database Management Systems

Data management system (DBMS). Software that controls the organization, storage, recovery, security and integrity of the data in a database. Accepts application requests and instructs the operating system to transfer the appropriate data.

Oracle

Oracle arises at the end of 1970 from the name of Relational Software from a study on DBMS (Database Management Systems). Computer World defined this study as one of the most complete ever written on databases. He used the philosophy of relational databases, something that at that time was still unknown. Oracle technology is found in virtually every industry around the world. Oracle is the first software company that develops and implements software for companies. Oracle Corporation is one of the largest software companies in the world. Its products range from databases (Oracle) to management systems.

MySQL

It is a relational database management system, was created by the Swedish company MySQL AB, which has the source code of the SQL server, as well as the brand. MySQL is an open source software, licensed under the GPL of the GNU, although MySQL AB distributes a commercial version, in the only thing that differs from the free version, it is in the technical support that is offered, and the possibility of integrating this manager in a proprietary software, since otherwise, the GPL license would be violated.

The programming language that MySQL uses is Structured Query Language (SQL) that was developed by IBM in 1981 and since then it is widely used in relational databases.

MySQL emerged around the 90s, Michael Windenis started using mSQL to connect tables using his own low level routines (ISAM). After some initial tests, he came to the conclusion that mSQL was not flexible enough or fast enough for what he needed, so he had to develop new functions. This resulted in an SQL interface to its database, fully compatible with mSQL.

Access

Access version 1.0 was released in November 1992, quickly in May 1993 Access 1.1 was released to improve compatibility with other Microsoft products and include the programming language of Access Basic.

It is a relational database management system created and modified by Microsoft for the personal use of small organizations. It is a component of the Microsoft Office suite although it is not included in the «basic» package. An additional possibility is to create files with databases that can be consulted by other programs. Within an information system would fall within the category of Management and not in the Office Automation as some believe.

MonogoDB

MongoDB. MongoDB (from the English word «humongous» which means enormous) is a document-oriented NoSQL database system, developed under the concept of open source. MongoDB is part of the new family of NoSQL database systems.

the development of monogoDB started with the software company 10gen in 2007, when they were developing a platform as a service (PAAS) similar to the well-known Google App Engine. In 2009, MonogoDB was launched as an independent product and published under the open source license AGPL. in March of 20011, version 1.4 was launched and it was considered already as a database ready for use in production.

SQL Server
SQL Server

SQL Server

It all starts in the year of 1989 with SQL Server 1.0 that came out for the old IBM OS / 2 operating systems that came out in 1987, then in 1993 it appears SQL Server 4.21 for Windows NT, then later in the year 1995 version of SQL Server 6.0 is released at the peak of the Windows 95 operating system, the next year in 1996 SQL Server 6.5 is launched. In 1998 Microsoft launches SQL Server 7.0 that becomes the most popular version, in the following year 1999 Microsoft released another version 7.0 with the tools OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) which is a solution used in the so-called Business Intelligence or Business Intelligence , where the goal is to speed up the consultation of large amounts of data. In the year 2000 that Microsoft released the SQL Server 2000 version, this 2000 version lasted for 5 years, then in 2005 the SQL Server 2005 or version 9.0 version was released, in 2008 SQL Server 2008 or version 10.0 was launched .
The latest version of this engine is released in 2010 as SQL Server 2008 R2, some call it SQL Server 2010.

Microsoft SQL Server is a Relational Database Management System (SGBD) which, in its most current versions, also has different types of tools incorporated into the program, is based on the Transact-SQL language and is capable of putting large amounts of data information to many users simultaneously and very quickly.

The goal of SQL Server is to be able to solve those business problems faced by people, thus minimizing the costs and complexity of the databases. SQL Server is launched in order to be the easiest database to use to build, manage and implement business applications.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is a general purpose and object-relational database management system, the most advanced open source database system. PostgreSQL was developed based on POSTGRES 4.2 at Berkeley Computer Science Department, University of California.

PostgreSQL was designed to run on UNIX-like platforms. However, PostgreSQL was then also designed to be portable so that it could run on various platforms such as Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows.

PostgreSQL is free and open source software. Its source code is available under PostgreSQL license, a liberal open source license. You are free to use, modify and distribute PostgreSQL in any form.

PostgreSQL requires very minimum maintained efforts because of its stability.  Therefore, if you develop applications based on PostgreSQL, the total cost of ownership is low in comparison with other database management systems.
